Review of Sugar-Free Chocolate Products
from The Vermont Country Store

By John M. Sedlak, Ph.D.

Seven chocolate products from The Vermont Country Store were reviewed, an enviable task under any circumstance. The high quality products were well worth the effort. The next two paragraphs contain information which apply to all of the Vermont chocolates sampled.

Products were well-packaged in either a brown paper (internally silvered) or in a conventional box with cello-coating. For the bags, there was a notch cut near the end which tore easily. Scissors were needed, however, to trim the bag slightly to permit opening the plastic bag seal. This was a minor inconvenience. Just be careful opening the bag to avoid damaging the reseal feature.

Product labels were attractive and contained all of the usual nutritional data. The Vermont Country Store prominently features potential allergy information. As with all foods, consumers must check nutritional facts to determine quantities which may be included in a particular diet. These sugar-free products are sweetened by Maltitol or Maltitol/Sorbitol.

Sugar-Free Vanilla Butter Creams

On opening the bag the reviewers found approximately 30 uniform pieces with no manufacturing imperfections. The aroma was the essence of rich, dark chocolate—a very effective invitation to sample a piece, which is precisely what happened. The first piece activated the taste buds which then “demanded” an additional sample. The tasting team complied readily. The chocolate flavor blended well with the butter-cream solid center. and felt very smooth in the mouth. The second piece even tasted sweeter than the first.

In summary, this treat is made from quality ingredients with an excellent taste and will greatly appeal to lovers of a traditional butter cream, but without the sugar.

Sugar-Free Chocolate-Covered Vanilla Caramel

The attractively formed caramel piece has an enticing dark chocolate aroma. The center is a very smooth caramel composition with a vanilla undertone. The caramel consistency is just right because it does not pull at the teeth when taking a bite. The combination of chocolate, vanilla, and “bite” promises a delicious treat.

Sugar-Free Cashew Clusters

Initially a delicious aroma of milk chocolate dominated the senses. These pieces are absolutely loaded with chunks of tasty cashew. The cluster is definitely a high quality milk chocolate treat for nut lovers. There are several good-sized bites in each piece. What a way to get a chocolate fix: nibbling a cluster bite by bite! One can’t tell this product is sugar-free. This product fulfills a desire for nuts in a sweet chocolate matrix.

Sugar-Free Dark Chocolate-Covered Almond Bark

The almond bark came in thick 2 inch x 2 inch squares in a loose arrangement in a sealed box. On opening, there was an immediate prominent dark chocolate aroma. I had to sample right away. The squares are heavily filled with high-quality whole almonds. When biting into the piece the almond flavor comes to life. The dark chocolate and almonds work together beautifully and provide a great mouth feel. The chocolate melts slowly. prolonging the taste.

If you like dark chocolate and almonds you don’t want to miss this product. Hard to say it’s sugar-free.

A companion product is the Sugar-Free Milk Chocolate Almond Bark which was supplied to the reviewer in a one pound re-sealable bag. As with the dark chocolate bark, pieces are of generous size and absolutely loaded with almonds. Bites melt in the mouth and provide a sweet milk chocolate taste. This reviewer had difficulty in stopping at two pieces during the sampling. This product is predicted to be a favorite among milk chocolate lovers.

Sugar-Free Dark Chocolate-Covered Coconut Clusters

On opening the box, the reviewer immediately sensed an aroma of dark chocolate overlaid with coconut, a great start to an enjoyable tasting session. These clusters are just full of finely shredded coconut. Every bite has plenty of coconut which imparts a satisfying chewiness. Once the dark chocolate melts away, a coconut flavor remains.

The wide range of products from The Vermont Country Store permitted a comparison with Milk Chocolate Sugar-Free Coconut Clusters. Both clusters have similar nutritional information and are sweetened with Maltitol. The milk chocolate cluster also has a splendid taste, although somewhat sweeter than the dark chocolate. Both products are made with quality ingredients, have an attractive appearance, and appeal to the senses.

Editor’s note: Unfortunately, I was not part of the tasting team, but John did share several of the products with me. I usually do not care for sugar-free products. However, these are an exception. They showcase the chocolate without the slight chemical or flat aftertaste that I often detect in products with non-sugar sweeteners. Delicious without qualification from a critical chocolate lover!
