Chocolate Stops: Mobile AL

Chocolate lovers will want to stop for chocolate treats at Cream & Sugar and the Pallette Cafe in Mobile, AL. Both restaurants are owned by Susan Carley, who received her Hotel-Restaurant Management degree from the University of Alabama. She says, though that she got her kitchen training much earlier from the school of hard knocks. She began making coffee for her Dad when she was four and was making breakfast and lunch for her family of five by the time she was six. By the age of 14, she was managing the family’s weekly grocery bill. “My parents gave me $50 a week (in the early 80’s) to buy the groceries and whatever was left over I could keep. It became a challenge to me to come up with very tasty dinner creations on a shoe string budget. Cream & Sugar is the sixth restaurant I’ve managed and the second one I’ve owned, but the first to specialize in desserts. We introduced cake balls to the Mobile area.”

Cream & Sugar, a coffee, dessert and ice cream shop in historic Oakleigh Garden District of downtown Mobile has 20 flavors of Chocolate Cake Balls, including white chocolate latte, chocolate covered strawberry cake, Reese’s Peanut Butter Balls, and Almond Joy Chocolate “I think their size is part of the appeal; so many people who are trying to watch what they eat can indulge in these two- or three-bite desserts without feeling too guilty,” says Carley. We also offer many cakes, pies, cookies and cupcakes, but the cake balls seem to be the real hit for both dining in and take out.”
